A Contract Employee In the “C” Suite
I am often invisible
I am an independent contractor who often finds myself in the “C” suite of international corporations. I am discreetly hired by managing partners or on occasion, the Human Resource Department. I only take a very few of these assignments at one time.
I am often the only woman in the room, quite frequently the youngest person as well. In my observation, who runs the world has not really changed. I do not sit at the conference table. I am as invisible as the handmaids in Bridgerton. I see and hear everything; I do not speak. My role has nothing to do with corporate policy or technology; pending litigation or acquisitions.
I maintain a professional demeanor throughout the briefing. It took a few years to garner trust to sit in the “room”. I learned, that I must hear the tone of the assignment before I can assist the employee whose writing I will polish. Previously, I relied on the employee, but their lack of an understanding of how nuanced American English can be, in both the written and spoken word is why I am hired in the first place.
